About the Job

Background

The Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) is conducting malaria drug resistance surveillance to detect and understand the spread of drug-resistant parasites in Ethiopia. The project, titled “Epidemiology and Determinants of Artemisinin Drug Resistance of Malaria in Ethiopia (MARE2)”, aims to identify resistance markers and study the spatial distribution and impact of known molecular markers. The project’s outcome will support national and regional malaria control efforts by informing clinical management and policy decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement laboratory action plans.
  • Ensure the quality of laboratory standards and maintain laboratory policies and SOPs.
  • Oversee internal and external quality control procedures.
  • Ensure availability and maintenance of laboratory equipment, reagents, and supplies.
  • Facilitate proper specimen management, data collection, and documentation.
  • Report laboratory activities to the project coordinator as required.
  • Contribute to molecular data analysis and preparation of publications.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant federal, state, and program regulations.

Deliverables

  • Accurate reporting and communication of laboratory data.
  • Maintenance of lab equipment and quality control (QC) inventory.
  • Biannual inventory checks for equipment, supplies, and reagents.

Reporting Structure
The position reports to the project coordinator and will be based at the Malaria and NTDs Research Directorate under the Malaria Research Team. The role involves collaboration with team members for planning and reporting.


About You

Education

  • Master’s degree in Molecular Medical Laboratory Science, Parasitology, Molecular Biology, or related biomedical sciences.

Experience

  • Minimum of 6 years of relevant experience.
  • Proficiency in molecular laboratory techniques (e.g., extraction, qPCR) and cell culture activities.
  • Familiarity with antimalarial drug resistance monitoring and molecular diagnostics.
  • Experience in procurement and supply management for molecular supplies.
  • Additional skills in sequencing and bioinformatics are desirable.
