The Ethiopian Statistics Service (ESS) is inviting qualified and competent applicants to apply for various positions.

Introduction

Statistical data collected and compiled using scientific methodologies are crucial for the economic, social, and democratic activities of a country. These data enable the Government and other institutions to formulate policies, monitor and evaluate policy implementations, and make informed decisions. The ESS collects and compiles data from sample surveys, censuses, and administrative records, analyzes data, and delivers reports for various sectors and users. Additionally, ESS provides technical guidance and assistance to government agencies, institutions, and individuals to establish administrative recording, registration, and reporting systems. The ESS is diversifying its statistical methodologies and upgrading the use of technology in its data collection, compilation, classification, analysis, and dissemination methods.

Background

Statistics work in Ethiopia started many years ago, but an organized system was created in the late 1950s. In 1952, a conference for Statisticians of African countries led to an agreement to submit a five-year statistical action plan, encouraging the creation of a more organized statistical system in Ethiopia. Proclamations in 2006 and 2007 renewed the Central Statistics Authority and established the Population Census Commission, which were fundamental in creating the statistical system ESS has today. ESS was established in 1959 under the instruction of the Minister of Trade and Industry and has grown to have 2439 full-time professionals and 3000 temporary workers.
