About the Organization:

Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) is an Ethiopian civil society organization, re-registered on September 19, 2019, under Proclamation No. 1113/2019. LHR aims to increase the participation and contribution of lawyers in human rights through training, capacity-building activities, support, and the exchange of ideas and information. LHR also focuses on strategic litigation, creating awareness of human rights, providing legal services to disadvantaged communities, and influencing legislative changes to protect human rights.

LHR is currently implementing a project titled “Advancing Human Rights through Legal Aid Services” in consortium with Advocates Ethiopia and Mizan Young Lawyers Association, supported by Agence Française de Développement (AFD). The project aims to provide legal aid services to detainees in police stations in Addis Ababa, Adama, and Hawassa.

Job Description:

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal aid services to detainees in selected police stations in Addis Ababa.
  • Offer legal advice to beneficiaries on matters related to their cases.
  • Prepare pleadings and necessary court documents based on client needs.
  • Report and document details of the legal aid services as per LHR guidelines.
  • Uphold ethical standards in providing legal aid services.

Skills and Educational Background:

Professional Competencies:

  • University degree in law (LLB) with 0 years of experience.
  • Knowledge of the Ethiopian legal system, criminal justice system, criminal and procedural laws, and the national and international legal framework on detainees’ rights.

Personal Qualities:

  • Ability to explain legal matters clearly.
  • Passion for justice, fairness, and human rights.
  • Ability to prioritize, multitask, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work under pressure and with limited supervision.
  • Proactive, goal-oriented, results-driven, and creative.
  • Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English and Amharic.
  • Computer literate with internet usage skills.
  • Strong documentation skills.

Salary: As per the organization scale
