CARE began operations in Ethiopia in 1984 in response to a severe drought and famine that claimed the lives of nearly one million people. Over the years, CARE Ethiopia has expanded its activities to address the root causes of poverty and vulnerability. In 2008, CARE Ethiopia transitioned from a project-based approach to a more strategic program-based approach. This shift has allowed the organization to achieve significant outcomes, impact government policies, and bring transformative change to rural communities.


1. Water Technician

  • Location: Central Gonder
  • Salary: 648 USD

Job Summary:

The Water Technician will assist the Water Engineer in conducting feasibility studies for rural water projects. The role involves maintaining inventory, ensuring the delivery of materials to sites, and supervising project activities to ensure high standards of workmanship and efficient use of materials and labor.

Skills and Educational Background:

A) Education/Training:

  • Required:
  • Diploma in Water Technology or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Desired:
  • BSc in Water Engineering.

B) Experience:

  • Required:
  • 4 years of experience for Diploma holders or 2 years for BSc holders in rural water works.
  • Desired:
  • Work experience in a development-oriented NGO.

C) Technical Skills:

  • Required:
  • Knowledge of rural water development schemes.
  • Experience with small-scale irrigation schemes.
  • Good communication skills in English.
  • A commitment to teamwork, gender equality, sensitivity to HIV/AIDS, participatory approaches, and sustainable development.
  • Desired:
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and other engineering software.

D) Competencies:

  • Respect, accountability, courage, excellence, adaptability, contributing to team success, initiating action, stress tolerance, innovation, teamwork.

Contacts/Key Relationships:

The Water Technician will establish and maintain good relations with communities, government institutions, and other stakeholders. The role requires close collaboration with the Construction Supervisor, Water Engineer, Extension Agents, and other CARE Field Office staff.

Working Conditions and Level of Travel Required:

  • The Water Technician will be based in the field office but is expected to spend 80% of their time in rural areas.
