Call for Applications: Fulbright African Research Scholar Program 2025-2026
The Public Diplomacy Section of the Embassy of the United States of America is pleased to announce the Fulbright African Research Scholar Program (FARSP) for the 2025-2026 academic year. The FARSP is administered for the U.S. Department of State by the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), a division of the Institute of International Education.
PROGRAM INFORMATION:
Two categories of grants are offered in the FARSP:
Research Grants:
Duration: 3 to 9 months.
Eligibility: University faculty or research institute professionals with a doctorate or equivalent terminal degree. Preference for individuals with at least three years of university teaching experience and a productive scholarly record.
Purpose: To conduct research in any academic discipline at a U.S. academic or research institution.
Start Date: Between August 2025 and March 2026.
Program and Curriculum Development Grants:
Duration: 3 to 5 months.
Eligibility: University faculty or administrators with a minimum of a master’s or equivalent graduate degree. A doctorate is not required. Designed for those with less experience who may not have had recent access to research or instructional developments.
Purpose: To conduct research in any academic discipline at a U.S. academic or research institution, linked to professional duties and aimed at developing new courses, curricula, or academic programs.
Start Date: Between August 2025 and March 2026.
Special Focus: HIV/AIDS
The FARSP includes a special group of grants for scholars with proposals in HIV/AIDS-related research. Scholars in all academic disciplines are invited to apply.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:
A detailed statement of 3 to 5 pages describing the proposed project and methodology.
A recent curriculum vitae, list of publications, dates of availability, and three current letters of reference/recommendation.
At least one reference letter should be from an individual outside the applicant’s home institution.
A letter of invitation from a potential U.S. host institution is required. Applicants may request placement assistance from CIES if unfamiliar with U.S. institutions, although this may delay the start of the grant.
Proposals should promote the spirit and goals of the Fulbright program – to enhance mutual understanding between the United States and African countries.
Applicants must have university teaching experience and a productive scholarly record.
Proposals for doctoral dissertation research, postdoctoral research immediately following a doctoral degree, or general professional travel are ineligible.
ELIGIBILITY:
No restrictions as to age, gender, faculty rank, or academic discipline.
Scholars who have received a Fulbright grant for study, teaching, or research in the U.S. within the last five years are ineligible.
Proposals for clinical medical research involving physician training, patient care, and contact cannot be approved.
