1. Intern: Democratic Governance and Peace Building

Description

I. Background

Governance is a key focus in UNDP’s Strategic Plan 2022-2025, alongside poverty and inequality, resilience, environment, energy, and gender equality. UNDP’s objective in Governance is to ensure accountable, inclusive, and effective governance to support sustainable development. The Governance for People and Planet (G4PP) programme exemplifies a human rights-based, problem-driven, and participatory approach to development.

Since 1995, Ethiopia has been modifying its governance structure, reforming civil services, and improving democratic institutions. However, Ethiopia’s governance landscape remains complex and challenging. Addressing these challenges, particularly the pervasive violent conflicts, is crucial for Ethiopia’s peace, stability, and development. UNDP supports Ethiopia through dialogue facilitation and strengthening the capacity of federal and regional partners for conflict management and peacebuilding.

II. Objective

The UNDP Ethiopia Country Office, Democratic Governance and Peacebuilding Unit (DGPU), seeks a motivated and independent intern to support the unit’s work. This internship offers graduate-level students the opportunity to gain practical experience in UNDP’s governance and peacebuilding initiatives.

III. Description of Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Team Leader of the DGPB Unit, the intern will:

  • Support project implementation by tracking results and success stories.
  • Collect and analyze information, assisting in reporting on governance and political economic analysis.
  • Prepare analytical pieces on governance, human rights, and justice.
  • Contribute to strategic partnerships and resource mobilization.
  • Assist in preparing substantive briefs and identifying opportunities for new projects.
  • Facilitate smooth project implementation by coordinating with other UNDP units.
  • Organize and document meetings and briefings.
  • Support knowledge building and management, maintaining activity records.
  • Manage calendars for governance activities and prepare logistics, ToR, and Concept Notes for missions.
  • Perform other duties as required by the unit.

VI. Qualifications

  • Commitment to a consecutive 6-month internship.
  • Interest in governance, peacebuilding, and rule of law issues.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a multicultural environment.

VIII. Languages

  • Fluency in oral and written English required.
  • Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.

IX. Intern Requirements

  • Monthly stipend provided.
  • Interns must have medical insurance coverage.
  • Interns are responsible for all internship-related expenses.
  • Interns cannot apply for or be appointed to any UNDP post during the internship.
  • Interns are not staff members and cannot represent UNDP officially.
