United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Vacancies

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) invites qualified and competent applicants to apply for the following vacant posts. Established in December 1991, OCHA strengthens international response to complex emergencies and natural disasters. OCHA’s mission includes mobilizing and coordinating effective humanitarian action, advocating for the rights of people in need, and promoting preparedness and prevention efforts.

Position 1: Finance Officer

Educational Background:

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in business administration, finance, or related field is required.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with an additional two (2) years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in finance, administration, budget, business administration or related area is required.
  • Experience in humanitarian financing, such as grant management, audit process, and humanitarian funding tracking is required.
  • Humanitarian experience in the field (actual setting where a mission and/or project is being implemented) in emergency situations (complex emergency or natural disaster) is desirable.
  • Experience in a humanitarian context within the UN common system or in a comparable international organization is desirable.
  • Experience in the Southern and/or Eastern African region is desirable.

Other Requirements:

  • Substantial on-the-ground expertise in complicated crises, including humanitarian assistance initiatives.
  • Experience with UN or NGO necessary.
  • Experience working effectively with government representatives and technical employees.
  • Demonstrated capacity to operate in an inter-agency context.
  • Cultural awareness and diplomatic skills.
  • Travel options inside the nation.

Position 2: Humanitarian Affairs Officer

Educational Background:

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, social science, international studies, public administration, economics, engineering, earth sciences, or a related field is required.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with an additional two (2) years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in humanitarian affairs, emergency preparedness, crisis/emergency relief management, rehabilitation, development, or other related area is required.
  • At least three (3) years of humanitarian experience in the field (actual setting where a mission and/or project is being implemented) in emergency situations (complex emergency or natural disaster) is required.
  • Experience managing field teams in humanitarian operations is required.
  • Experience in the UN Common System or other comparable international organization is desirable.
  • Experience in the region (North-East Africa) is desirable.
